Omaha Hi-Low: General Overview

[ English | Deutsch | Español | Français | Italiano ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
