Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.
The real improvement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
