Omaha Hi/Low: Fundamental Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting choices and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
