Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played countless hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The real advancement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
