Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, and several battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
